Pelican
Cove
Measuring 2,500 square meters,
Pelican Cove will house the most comprehensive collection of
pelicans in the world, with over 40 birds and all seven species of
the pelican family. The Cove also boasts of the world’s only
underwater viewing of pelican feeding, allowing visitors to observe
the birds’ feeding behavior underwater. See the pelicans up close
and visit the underwater viewing gallery as the pelicans dive for
their food during feeding time.
Lory Loft
The world’s largest Lory flight aviary, the 3,000 square meters Lory
Loft offers visitors a simulation of the vast Australian “outback”
landscape complete with a windmill and bushmen’s hut. The highlight
species of Lory Loft is the Rainbow Lory, a beautiful and colorful
parrot. Lory Loft is also home to nine other species of Lories like
the Black-capped Lory and Dusky Lory as well as others. Lory Loft
provides visitors with a 360 degrees elevated view of the
surroundings. With the elevated boardwalk and swinging suspension
bridges, visitors are ‘lifted’ 12 meters off ground level, for a
heightened experience of the tranquil ambience. At the two-tiered
central feeding tower, visitors will have the opportunity to feed
the birds by hand with nectar. Be enamored by the breathtaking view
and the wondrous spectacle of the 1,000 lories feeding whilst
enjoying a cuppa Australian Coffee at the Lory Loft.
Penguin
Parade
Occupying an area of 1630 sq meters, the Penguin Parade is the
home to the more than 200 penguins from 5 different species of
Humboldt, the Rockhopper, the Macaroni, the Fairy and the majestic
King Penguin. With a temperature of 16 degrees Celsius, the Penguin
Parade has a large pool set against a landscape of rocks, cliffs,
nesting alcoves and burrows to simulate the penguins’ natural
habitat in the Antarctic. A special lighting system recreates the
four seasons of the year effect to enable them to maintain their
bio-rhythm. Visitors at the exhibit will be treated to a vast
panoramic view of these fascinating penguins as they ‘fly’
underwater through a specially constructed viewing gallery. Catch
the penguins at their feeding time at 10:30am and 3:30pm.
World of Darkness
Asia’s first nocturnal bird house, the World of Darkness is
exhibits nocturnal birds through a system of reversed lighting,
enabling day to be converted into night and vice-versa so that the
visitor can get a glimpse into the life of the 60 nocturnal birds
from 17 different species such as the Snowy Owl. Visitors will have
the impression that they are walking along a quiet star-lit jungle
path at night, watching the birds in their natural habitats as their
haunting calls beckon. The Night Herons and Fish Owls in their
mangrove swamps, Snowy Owls on ice-capped mountains, and many other
nocturnal birds provide a veritable feast for the eyes in the quiet
stillness of the ‘night’.
Southeast
Asian Birds Aviary
With a collection of about 260 Southeast Asian species, this is one
of the world’s largest collections of some of the most exotic birds
and endangered species. The exhibit concentrates some 100 species of
birds in a group of aviaries with a large walk-in aviary in the
centre where birds fly freely. Visitors will be able to admire the
birds’ rarely seen beauty, listen to their beautiful songs and watch
them as they would live in the wild. While the aviary has been
landscaped to provide a simulated secondary rain forest environment
for the birds to live in, it also gives many vantage points from
which visitors can observe the birds up close. As part of the rain
forest experience, there is a tropical thunderstorm that comes on at
12pm daily. The rain falls in the centre of the aviary away from the
visitors’ walkway.
Hornbills and Toucans Exhibit
Playful South American toucans tossing fruits into the air; exotic
hornbills displaying their magnificent bills and casques in flight;
the female hornbill sealing herself in a tree hole for nesting –
these amazing and rare sights of nature are happening right here at
the Hornbills and Toucans Exhibit. Covering an area of 2000 sq
meters, the exhibit houses the world’s largest collection of
Southeast Asian hornbills and a wide variety of South American
toucans. The 25 large aviaries measuring some 10m in height are
landscaped to simulate the birds’ natural habitat. These spacious
aviaries provide a conducive environment for them to display their
natural behavior and also breed in captivity. Check out the
Hornbills and Toucans show at 11:45am.
Royal
Ramble
With a 40m long walkway that takes you right through the enclosure,
the Royal Ramble features the Crowned Pigeons, the largest pigeons
in the world. There will be railings to lean on and benches to sit
on, for a leisurely encounter with these birds who are often
mistaken for miniature peafowls. Named for the Crowned Pigeons'
noble looks and regal walk, Royal Ramble offers an unobtrusive view
of the largest pigeons in the world. Whether the birds are rambling
on the ground, or roosting in the treetops, you'll be privy to their
lacy crowns and elaborate plumage, funny sunbathing poses and
intricate courtship behavior of bows and deep vocalization. Who
knows, if you are lucky, you might have one of Nature's royalty
perched on the railings peering at you with its startlingly red
eyes. If you are luckier, one might just decide to display its
courtship ceremony to you!
Window on Paradise
Offering a lovely ringside view of the Bird of Paradise, Window on
Paradise includes a 40m long tree-top level walkway which offers a
completely unobtrusive view of the birds. Now would be the best time
to observe these birds as they enter the mating season with
fabulously-colored plumage and intricate courtship behavior. View
also the 12-Wired Birds of Paradise (so named due to the 12 wired
projections protruding from its tail) bred for the first time in the
world by the Park.
Waterfall Aviary
This
2 hectare Waterfall Aviary remains as the world’s largest walk-in
aviary with the highest man-made waterfall standing at over 30m. It
is home for some 1500 free-flying birds from 80 African states and
provides visitors with a unique opportunity to watch them roost,
bathe, feed and even raise their young in their nests. Set in a
valley, the Aviary is landscaped with 10000 exotic plants comprising
125 species of trees, bamboo, palms and ground-cover vegetation to
simulate a tropical rain forest. In addition, an artificial 8m tall
tree molded from an actual 100-year-old Barking Deer’s Mango tree
has also been planted to enhance the rainforest landscape. Visitors
can stroll along shaded walkways and enjoy the rainforest
experience, which comes complete with mysterious bird calls, a
rambling waterfall, and mist professing along gorges. A rustic
suspension bridge offers a breath-taking view of the waterfall while
two observation posts at the top offer grand views of the Aviary. A
special highlight in the Aviary is the feeding programme. Every day,
colorful flocks of Australasian parrots known as lories dramatically
descend at the feeding platform for their food. Their visual colors
and sounds are spectacular treats for visitors. Another thrilling
encounter is the feeding of the bee-eaters of Africa and starlings
in all shades of blue as they hunt after their food – grasshoppers,
crickets, worms and other insects – which are released during
feeding times. The insect chase is simply captivating. The feeding
times for Lories are at 11:30am and 3:30pm, and the Starling and
Bee-eater feeding times are at 10:30am, 11:30am and 4pm.
Swan Lake
Located next to the Pelican Cove, a variety of swan species like the
Black-necked Swan and the Mute Swan make their home here. At the
lake, these water birds can be observed roosting, fishing and
bathing at close quarters. It is truly a refreshing experience to
watch them swimming amidst the tranquil ambience. Visitors can enjoy
a grand view of the lake from the Observation Deck which will allow
them to get close to the water edge and observe these graceful
birds.
Parrot Paradise
A
1 hectare exhibit showcasing more than 500 parrots from 110 species,
Parrot Paradise is designed to simulate as closely as possible the
parrots’ natural habitats with the help of beautiful hand-painted
murals, as well as the natural vegetation. These habitats include
tropical rainforest, grasslands, semi-desserts, riverbanks, or rocky
cliffs. Although parrots are typically long-lived and can live up to
50 years in captivity, many species have become extinct or are in
danger of doing so. This is the reason why special provisions have
been made to encourage the breeding of parrots in captivity at the
Parrot Paradise. So far, the Park has successfully bred 50 different
species of the parrots in its collection. The exhibit also has an
interpretative pavilion, which provides interesting information on
the display panels. It houses a large, hollow, man-made tree where
children can play in and learn for themselves how the parrots view
the rest of the world from their nests in the hollows of tree
trunks.
Jungle Jewels
The design of Jungle Jewels walk-in aviary creates an environment
where visitors can observe at close proximity a fraction of the
amazing diversity and complexity of the South American rainforest.
High in the treetops live fruit-eating birds like the tanagers and
cotingas. In the lower levels, honeycreepers and finches are more
common. On the forest floor and streams live the waterbirds like
teals and pintails. However, the Hummingbirds, arguably the colorful
bird in the world with their boundless energy and vibrant,
iridescent plumage, are the main highlight of Jungle Jewels. Beside
the walk-in aviary is an air-conditioned area displaying
hummingbirds in individual aviaries. Male and female hummingbirds
are housed in specially designed breeding enclosures which allows
the female access to the male while still ensuring privacy to raise
her family.
The Riverine
A simulated natural freshwater river habitat featuring various
species of waterfowl, fishes and turtles, the Riverine is designed
to give visitors an intimate underwater view of more than 20 duck
species, through an 11m wide glass-viewing gallery. Filled with
clear recycled water, the Riverine gives the illusion of a
fast-flowing and cascading river where visitors have the unique
opportunity to see these waterfowl swimming and diving. The feeding
sessions and touch pool will also provide wonderful viewing and
learning opportunities for visitors. Feeding time is at 11:30am and
3:30pm.
